ALLOTMENT
WATCH

It is a sad fact of life that uninhabited areas
like allotments do from time to time find themselves the target
of vandals and other n'er-do-wells. In the growing season particularly
sites are also targeted by thieves who see nothing wrong in helping
themselves to produce lovingly grown and nurtured by someone else.
Others have gone further and broken into sheds and stolen equipment.
As a result of discussions between the council
and police and the Worthing and District Allotments and Gardens
Association a local Allotment Watch was set up in 2008 to help
cut down on allotment crime. Security at sites was improved, patrols
instigated and an engraving machine was given to the Association
so that any member could have their tools engraved if they so
wish.
All crime should be reported (see below) but the
old adage "Prevention is Better than Cure" certainly
holds good. All sites have lockable gates and these should be
locked at all times except at those sites with stores when the
stores are open for business. Every time you go out PLEASE
LOCK THE GATE. If you are a witness to or a victim of crime,
be it on an allotment site or anywhere else, PLEASE REPORT
IT.

What
do I do to report a crime?
We have been instructed by the council to report all incidents to
the police who have told us what is required to pursue such incidents.
Basically the following information will be required by them, (as dictated
by the Home Office) to log the incident and assign an incident/crime number.
- Name of complainant
- Address of complainant
- Telephone number of complainant
- Date of birth (optional)
- Ethnicity (optional)
- Date/Time of Incident
- What has been Stolen/Damaged
- Any relevant history.
If the Association receives any complaints in future, we need to log
these and are willing to pass the information on to the police.
However, it is preferable that the complainant contacts the police directly;
they can either call the incident centre on:
0845-60-70-999
or email them to the email address below:

ALLOTMENT
WATCH
It aims:
-
To increase the security and prevention of allotment
related crime.
-
To offer support and reassurance to the wide range
of people throughout the allotment community, whilst gaining information
to help reduce crime.
-
To generate a positive attitude to the above aims by
taking care not only of your own property, but also that of neighbouring
or nearby allotments and equipment.
-
To provide an adequate communication network through
which information can be quickly circulated.
-
Through the Allotment Watch Scheme that was set up,
we have moved forward with making safety and security more a priority.
This has been achieved in a number of ways:
-
The Allotment Watch signs at all entrances to Allotment
sites.
-
Better communication through Police Representatives,
the Allotment Association, and Site Overseers.
-
Crime reduction initiatives e.g.: Post-code engraving
of tools, car boot sale Patrols.
-
Pro-active activity by Allotment tenants e.g.: securing
gates, challenging strangers and general awareness.
Allotment Watch is seen as an important extension in our
local community crime prevention. Worthing Borough Council and Sussex
Police would encourage all allotment holders to join.
If any criminal damage or theft should occur, please call Sussex Police
on the following number as soon as possible, quoting ALLOTMENT WATCH
0845 60 70 999
Thank you Sussex Police
Our
contact
Hello all.
I have now taken over Allotment Watch from Dan Cobden so I look forward
to working with you all. I work in Tarring so it made sense I took over
as I have three allotments on the area. My telephone number is 07920247493.
PCSO Julie Green
From
our old contact
I have received a couple of emails from allotment tenants
reporting numerous thefts and damage from both theirs and other plots.
Any reports of this nature need to be reported by the actual victims to
Police on the non-emergency number 0845-60-70-999 and not to the liaison
officer as it is the call centre who can 'crime' it. When a victim calls
up they will need to supply their full details such as name, address,
d.o.b.,etc.

Worthing Allotment Watch was duly launched on Sunday morning,
4th August 2008 with free tool engraving at West Tarring Site. A big CCTV
police van and a police car turned up for a 10.00am start and the council
was represented by Councillor Oakley and Sasha Bryson (WBC). Allotmenteers
presented an array of tools to be security marked and details were duly
logged in black and white for police records. The drizzle did its best
but, not to be put off, the police got round this by erecting a rainproof
gazebo while some took shelter in Ian's store. The service was provided
free of charge and is part of the venture brought about by the joint workings
of West Sussex Police, Worthing Borough Council and The Worthing and District
Allotments & Gardens Association.
