Worthing and District Allotments and Gardens Association

Affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society and the National Vegetable Society

BACKGROUND

Allotments have been around for quite a long time, originally created for poor agricultural workers to compensate them for the loss of common land during the enclosures of the eighteenth century. Most new allotments after 1875 were created for the benefit of urban workers and many town and city dwellers today enjoy growing their own produce on such sites. 50 years ago there were around a million allotments in this country and although only about a quarter of this number still remains an interest in organic and fresh food means they are enjoying a new popularity and currently in Worthing we have a waiting list of would-be diggers.

There are now 8 allotment sites in Worthing, providing around 1000 allotments.

2008 marked our association's diamond jubilee.

Membership of our association is open not only to plot holders on any of the above sites but to anyone living in the Worthing area. We have an elected committee who all offer their services for free. At present the committee comprises:

a chairman, two joint honorary secretaries, honorary treasurer, trading secretary, social secretary, show secretary, newsletter co-ordinator, web master and someone responsible for the door-to-door distribution of the newsletter. There are also sub-committees to help with the show and the newsletter. Any member can attend the monthly committee meetings and the AGM.

In addition each allotment site has an army of overseers who can take care of almost any problem and three sites have stores for members. Again these are all staffed by volunteers. If you are a member and would like to be involved in any way whatsover even if it's an area we don't appear to cover at the moment OR if you'd just like to say something, feel free to contact us by clicking on the "Contact us" link.

If you're not a member but you think you'd like to be, have a look at our membership page and contact Ken.
